Essential Tasks

Major Purpose:

To ensure high standards for student performance across teachers and departments.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Essential tasks are administered in courses and make up a significant part of the grade in each course. The essential tasks include content and skills that are essential for a student to know and be able to do. Each essential task includes an assessment in the form of an objective test or rubric. Some essential tasks are specific to a course or a department. Other essential tasks are administered in two or more courses within a department or in two or more departments. Teachers who administer the same essential task use common standards for administering the activity and assessment.

Each course description in this issue of the Lion's Lore contains a section that indicates which essential tasks are administered in each course. On page 5 is a chart listing the titles and numbers for the essential tasks. At the back of this catalog on page 161 is a list of the essential tasks with brief descriptions. These brief descriptions are intended to offer parents and students a general idea of what each task generally involves. Further details concerning the essential tasks will be given to students in class and to parents at Back-to-School night in the fall.
